Q: Do I still need a release letter?
I need to break my contract early for medical reasons. I will be going back home very soon and I plan on staying there for at least 6 weeks. I do plan on coming back to China though maybe around mid November. My school told me that they will not provide me with a release letter etc. because I am breaking my contract early. My question is do I still need a release letter from them or will I be able to apply for a new Z visa in my home country? If all comes to all if I get a new passport from my home country and then apply for a new visa would that help in solving this problem?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

if you are breaking your contract for medical reasons, does that mean your school would prefer you to teach while you are ill? With the emphasis on health that many of us have encountered in China, it seems inhuman to expect someone who is sick to work.
EDIT: is there a clause in the contract regarding illness?
Sorry you're in this position. Hopefully there's a clause in your contract; if so perhaps you can get that release letter; there must be a way to get that release letter - if not now, then once you are back in your home country with a new job offer. Good luck and let us know what happens.
Yes, you need Release letter, because new employer will ask you about it.
Your School must give you RL, despite you are not finishing your Contract. Contact SAFEA (Foreign Expert Bureau), and ask them for help. You must have Residence permit, Working permit and FEC to get SAFEA involved.
I break Contract with Dalian Training center in April this year. I gave them 30-days Resignation notice as per Contract, with 'too many working hours' as cause for early Contract break. I was required to work 80 hours per month by Contract, but School made me work 85 -90 hours per month. I just told them, I am too tired.
On April 15th, I contacted SAFEA, and complained that School refuse (delay) to give me Release letter and FEC cancelation certificate.
I received all documents on June 29th, 2013. My RP expired on June 30th, 2013. I gave my new employer Release letter from my part-time job (written in Chinese), and new School in Xinjiang was able to extend my RP.
Did you ask your School to grant you unpaid medical leave for 6 weeks? You might need Chinese translator at SAFEA.
