Do you attend church regularly in China? Is it a Catholic church? A Protestant church? How have you been received by the parishioners? The clergy? Was the service well-attended?
I do attend a local Catholic Church locally, and even for the 7:30 am Mass is always packed full. There are two services, the second one is at 7 pm. Normally last about 1-1/2 hours.
Parishioners are very nice, and even it is all in Mandarin, and I follow in English as I recognize prayers and songs (sometimes I do them in Latin, since I was for years an altar boy), a very special moment comes when it is "peace" time, and just about every one wishes to shake my hand.
The priest is a nice young chinese, maybe in his late 30's or early 40's, and does speak some English. And of course, after Mass is over, many want to practice their English with me. I am, unfortunately, the only laowai present.
To simply answer your question. I have never set foot in any kind of church in my 6+ years in China.
I was not at all surprised to read Happy's post about the place being packed as like just everything else, there is usually enough people interested in almost anything here to have a good turnout of locals. I see church as another event that can attract a sizeable Chinese crowd just like a weekly event of less or more importance.
To each his own.
