There's a belief here that when you have a cough you shouldn't eat baked goods or heavily fried stuff like chips or the cough will get worse. This is called 上火 (shang huo) and the wife's telling me that for my own good i've got to take her word for it and avoid these certain foods as I have a chesty cold at the moment.
Is there any reason to suggest this is correct, because I want some toast?
Old wives tale. But if you just eat cookies then your body will be lacking some of the vitamins to keep fit. Have an apple in between your peanutbutter/jelly sandwiches.
Also. I would think there is a similar Russian old wives tale that says a big glass of frosty cold vodka will cure any ailment. Back home having a cup of tea with rum is what some people do. Does it help. Not at all, but it helps boost the mood or numb the feeling of misery.
MissA:
I live with a Scot and I get force-fed hot toddys with whisky whenever I'm sick. Actually, I get force fed whisky sick or well... I just get some hot water and spices when I'm sick
this is pure chinese propaganda. Dont believe a word of that.
It's not an old wives tale. Too many carbohydrates will make it harder to recover while sick. Carbs are inflammatory thingmabobberies, and they greatly contribute cancer, sickness, infection, obesity, etc.
back home, while we are sick or have some stomach unconfortables, we have usual diet consist of bread and tea ... and some fruit, of course. but no heavy oily meaty foodie
And, I hate the word : "Shang Huo" !!! fa\kin' stupid
