Don't get me wrong, I think Weibo, Weixin and the like, are great platforms for people to share stories that would otherwise never appear in the state news. But I have found myself getting more aware of my behaviour in public and fear that if I do something unusual -- like have an anger fit or set up a street stall -- people will take a photo with their camera phones and post it on Weibo for the whole country to see. Sometimes, such posts can be really damaging to someone's reputation and may even affect their legal status in China. It's just something to think about. I see people snatching out their phones as soon as they hear a raised voice, ready to take a photo in the hope of creating a viral post.

I do indeed. Especially on the subway when people are pushing or shoving or whatever - something I can't stand as an Englishman - however they are always all armed with smart phones so I know if I make a scene I'll be on par with those foreigners who get caught getting into fights.
I behave in China as i would at home. If any local in China thinks recording my on their iphone is interesting, they much lead a very boring life.
2 months ago i was shopping in a mall and my skirt got sucked into the escalator, I tried to pulled it out but it wouldn't move, I was worried i would end up walking in public in my underpants then got pics taken and posted on weibo...
thank god I was at the end of the escalator so I could reach the emergency stop button, 5 people came over helped me stay calm and got the guy in charge of escalators, finally he reversed the sense of the escalator and got the skirt free.
brand new skirt ruined and lesson learned.
TedDBayer:
One more reason to wear miniskirts, public safety, would have been a good show though, what colour undies, red?
diehard:
I was wearing a flattering long skirt, and I was at the end of the escalator , so only the bottom of my skirt got sucked in, I'm sorry to disappoint you ted, no pantie show.
This isn't just a China problem though is it? Twitter, facebook, youtube - weixin and weibo are just Chinese equivalents. Basically you can't ever make a mistake, anywhere, ever again. Which really sucks because I know that one day I will. I have a condition you see - it's called being human.
Never consider it. I only need 1 persons acceptance. Mine! I could care less what others think.
How would a Chinese person be able to determine what "abnormal" behaviour is?
