Q: do you feel as if you are getting dumber here?
country not this site
By here to do mean the Middle Kingdom and though refusing to drink the koolaid it still seems to be seeping in some way. Cause you can only watch a mass of people pound their head against a brick wall before you start to think that it might not be such a bad idea and what the problem for trying it just once.
Or by here do you mean this site and the fact we was all of our time venting of the exact same questions asked repeatedly and how we just accept the answers giving here compared to doing the research ourselves and going out into the culture to learn first handed.
(Wow my answers seem a lot more mean spirited when I wake up and the edge of hang over/ still being drunk)
Probably not getting dumber, just trying to learn the Chinese charactors can make anyone feel dumb. Yesterday me and some of my students watched a car plough into the security gate from a standing start, even though the gate was open wide enough for a truck to go through. Man we just stood there in total amazement, and discussed "how could they have done that"? Talk about dumb I have never seen anyone do something so stupid in my life and neither had my Chinese friends.
I was about to go in my car to do some shopping, and I must say, I said to myself, I hope I am not so dumb!! Your reading my mind!!
Not dumber, but definitely ruder and less civilized. I mean you have to be when it comes to the bus/train, supermarket, etc
When in Rome ...

yeah a fews days ago i was waiting for the elevator, i forgot where i was (i didnt press myself against the door) and all these people gathered in front of me. this one girl parked herself right in front of me. so when the elevator came i forced myself against her back pushing her into the elevator while shoulder all the idiots who cut in front of me out of the way. she looked back at me a few times. i felt ashamed but while waiting for the elevator going down she parked herself right in front of me again ;)
I sometimes feel like I am, but maybe it is not because I'm in China but because I'm not in university anymore and as a result, I don't challenge myself academically. I read a lot less books and drink a lot more alcohol since living here which doesn't help the brain cells .
The fact that we vent our feelings about the stupid stuff we see means we are probably not getting dumber but I would argue the case for the affirmative about becoming more accepting. I have the readers back home in fits of laughter writing about some of the stuff I see and experience but you have to admit - it's, at times, mind boggling!
Ichickman equates dumb with rude. I am inclined to agree but just have to find where the dividing line is. It's blurred. Some things defy description!
