I'm wearing 20 - 25Y old brown leader (pig) high boots (15 cm below my knee), hand made by one of the Italian/US shoemakers.

Sometimes, I have to wear them in the classroom, however students eyes always get off the books, and onto my boots.

I don't do any plastic/rubber in my apparel. 100% waterproof will kill/cook your feet. I'm very naturalistic guy.

If you wear (fisherman's) rubber boots, your feet will sweat extensively, what will make your socks 'wet' (and smelly). So, what did you protect yourself from? Rain, snow, humidity?

I think, it's better to have several pairs of quality shoes and (dry) socks for rainy weather, and exchange it accordingly.

I used Crocs a long time.... at first I thought that I would hate them.  then after giving them a chance it turned out I love them...  they didn't rub blisters on my feet which was my #1 surprise.
