Q: Do you think Beijing or Shanghai will ever have a flourishing bohemian scene like NY or London?

Despite having small music and arts scenes in Beijing and Shanghai, it's obviously miniscule and super-tame compared to mega cities like New York which nurtured such musicians and artists as David Bowie, Lou Reed, Andy Warhol etc.

Interesting. I think Beijing will be the pioneer with that in years to come with the emergence of it's rock scene and art districts. I only hope they're given funding and people actually start caring more about the arts in the future, though I see signs of progression.

@coffaholic Hey, I like your question. Are you a Chinese girl or just an expat like any of us?  I ask you that as it sounds really good hearing it from a Chinese person, assuming you are a Chinese. I like the way you say it: "bohemian scene" and I hope it will come up to the real meaning of what bohemian life style it means. That reminds me of the Rue de Montmartre, in Paris, where Art and History made school on that street.

When I studied Fine Arts in the High School I learnt about being bohemian and I  deeply inquired into the French Culture. I felt in love with the French language since I was 12. Thus I could know on my won about France and its Culture, artists, writers, philosophers and so on.

I wish Shanghai and Beijing become places for the best artists and Art in the world and offer this bohemian scene you talk about as it did in its time Paris through one of its most important places: Rue de Montmartre.

David Bowie is English........pretty sure New York didn't nurture him.

The problem with Chinese music is the genres, or rather lack of.  While there are a few "rock" bands, the majority of Chinese music is all rather similar in my opinion. Even the rock music is really tame and more like pop.  Like you say, the music and art scenes in Beiijng and Shanghai are pretty small atthe mo, but who knows what will happen in the future.  I think creativity has been crushed in China but the younger generations are starting to explore and think for themselves now.

:

The Chinese music, not the traditional one, the pop and so forth it's just anti music. I had the pleasure, nonetheless to hear some inspirational songs, but I assume it's been also due to the performer's voice. Oh, there is a Chinese singer whose voice it's a miracle in the way she reaches high pitch sounds with a full body and soul vibration. But I just can't recall her name. I will look for it. That Diva, as I understand she is called like it, has been performing at the Hong-Kong Theater in Tsim-Sha Tsui, several times. She is in my opinion one of the very outstanding voices not only in China but in the whole world. If anybody can help with getting her name it would be great. Otherwise, as I said, the Chinese pop and rock music it's just a nonsense. It's just something that doesn't define the Chinese soul. Thus, whatever they try to imitate it's like anything that is copied in China: FAKE, cheap and of bad quality. Yet, it's not in the imitation that lays the problem, but in the way they do it. They don't even know how to imitate, how to copy and thus they don't learn. They copy but they are resistant to learning from what they do. It's a sort of resistance to change in the positive way because they are stubborn. The more they copy and fake, the more they grow in a Culture of stubborness learning to only refuse learning. They exercise their spirit into devaluating, belittling everything that is not original Chinese. And, because they have trained their minds to such endeavors they end up with a cheap creative spirit inflicting on themselves with the inability to be original, outstanding original. They don't even see the circle of vicious they are caught in. The day they will want to wake up they won't be able to find the reason of their poor spirits because they go round about the same mistakes. Because they steal others and despise their art, they have ended up stealing and despising themselves.
