I'm quitting my job and my boss needs to cancel my residence permit. Will the PSB need to take my passport during this time? I f want to head to Shanghai for a couple of days before I go.
Yes they need your passport, it's 100% sure... But I've only heard of 3 cases of employers actually canceling a work visa in the last 7 years, mmm must be a top notch company trying to protect it self from you. what did you do?
I am pretty sure they need your passport. When they cancel your RP you can ask them for a 1 month tourist visa. They will need your passport to put that in.

They can't cancel RP without your passport.
When they'll cancel it, PSB will get you 30-days L, either to give you time to find new employer or return home/exit China, before L expiration.
I had similar thing twice in China:
-in Liaoning, I left Dalian for Xinjiang, and new employer extend my RP two weeks before expiration. I resigned, and kept RP (2012);
- In Fujian, SAFEA told me school must cancel RP, and new employer will be able to extend RP/reissue new one after 30-days S2 expiration (2014). PSB returned my passport (with S2) after 2 days.
