I was thinking of doing some charity/NGO work over the summer and have been given a list of recommendations by an Aussie friend who used to work with migrant kids. She said it was fruitful but there were obvious bureaucratic hurdles and annoyances. Anyone here have any exp in the field? I thought it would be a good to help out as I may have a bit of time to spare over the summer. Cheers.

I volunteered before. I helped out setting up posters and other things. I asked the guy if I could get a t-shirt and he said yes, but that was a come on. I still went there and the experience was alright for me. I volunteered at the hospital back home so I have lots of experience with volunteer work.
i do some free lessons for what they call 'left behind children' in the summer, during school year, school days are almost everyday but grandma and grandpa go crazy in the summer when mom and dad migrant worker are not around to tame the children, so the government does all day camps for the kids to not give the elderly a heatstroke. spring festival parents are home or coming home and to damn cold, but summer is problematic. several universities loan teachers to the program to get favourable treatment for future visa problems with the psp, who of course run the program.
Unfortunately my only experience in this field was with a school who sent me out into the sticks to work in a very rundown primary school. I was still being paid but the school I was with claimed they were sending me out of the kindness of their hearts. It turned out that they also sent a film crew and very quickly got the story on local television, and once they'd gotten their free advertising, they quit. I felt physically sick for having been so naive as to believe they'd keep sending me.

Yeah, I refuse to be part of a scam. The only reason I'm teaching at this kindergarten is because they're legit and actually teaching the kids.
I went with some students to an orphanage. They played games and gave snacks to the children. There wasn't much I could do, but it was certainly an experience I will never forget.

Me and my missus have a yearly tradition of getting presents for whichever orphanage is closest, every Spring Festival. I'm talking sacks and sacks of stuff, we really go to town with it. Have to make sure and meet a few members of staff, rather than just hand it over to the first person we meet though, otherwise we'd end up setting up some unscrupulous bast**d with the best car boot sale ever.
Yes, I have done volunteer work, an entire school year. On my day off, I volunteered at
the local primary school to help teach English to grades 3, 4 and 5. It was a great experience and this way I really became part of the neighborhood.
I have done some work that I thought was going to be paid, but ended up being volunteer.
