I was leafing through the 'USDA China food processing annual report, 2015' for my work. It's very dry and uninteresting, but I came across the following passage regarding healthy eating:
"It is estimated that 70 percent of Chinese are suffering from some form of sub-health deficiency. They do not have organic or functional diseases and disabilities, but feel uncomfortable, fatigued, inactive, and are always in a state of anxiety and annoyance. Physicals may find higher blood pressure, blood sugar, blood viscidity, being overweight, or an under-active immune system. This creates demand for relevant health food and dietary supplements that can ease or prevent such symptoms."
If true, I find that an amazing statistic. These symptoms could account for many of Chinas problems from the rudeness of people due to constantly feeling uncomfortable and annoyed to all round lethargy and laziness.
So can it possibly be true? Are all of Chinas problems caused by crappy food?
When I ask my friends from HK or Taiwan.
"How do you tell Mainland Chinese apart from other Chinese looking people?"
"They always look tired."
True story.
Englteachted:
Chinese just aren't enthused about life. Life here is about being a servant to the government, family, work and school. The idea of really doing something for the joy of it is something that doesn't really exist. They only do things to post on wechat to make their lives seem interesting.

@Englteachted: I think you are right. As for Wechat, it's 90% fake happiness and those people are miserable when there isn't a camera pointing at them. Chinese are all about appearances. Like those random Chinese dudes who try and appear dominant/cool when there is a Foreign guy around while you just don't care and mind your own business but they insist and "look at me! I am better than you! nah!" and they usually completely lose it if you keep ignoring them. Chinese are all about pretense, inside they are miserable.
i think you could apply that to many countries.
You must admit that food in general has become very modified from its origins over the years.
just because an apple hasn't any spots on it doesn't mean it is healthy.
you have to wonder what they did to get rid of the spots.
progress has its down side tòo

Yes I thought that too, I have no idea what the stats are for other countries. Just thought it was too good a passage not to share!
Could be. I can't eat Chinese food everyday, my body feels the same as if I was eating KFC or something.
Too heavy on the oil, salt and msg for my taste. It doesn't matter how many vegetables are in there if it's drowned in oil.
The lack of exercise and clean air can't help either.

Street food in China is various, but can be dangerous.
