Several months ago I exchanges some rmb into American dollars. I ended up not needing them for my original intentions so I just keep them in my billfold. Then later while at the consulate in Guangzhou I tried to pay for my marriageability papers with the American money. They tried several times to run it through the machine, but no luck. Recently when at the bank where I purchased the money I tried to reconvert it to rmb, but same problem their machine wouldn’t take it. I would like to think that the money is good but who knows ? I am guessing that if I take back to the bank and explain what happened instead of checking their system they will simply think I am trying to take them for a ride. Do I just eat the loss or what? I worry that if I try to use it back home I will get busted or something.

Where did you exchange it the first time? Go back to the place that gave it to you. They will usually give you a receipt of the transaction. Bring that if you can.
You cant get in trouble for unknowingly passing it around. So either you take the loss or pass the losses onto someone else.
Id keep trying to get rid of it if its a larger amount.
Make sure you ask for the USD printed in the USA and not the North Korean Stuff
