Got visitors coming real soon and want to give them the best culinary experience possible while here. However, the local places I always go to are not exactly the type of places someone fresh off the boat from the West will like (grimy, hole-in-the-wall interior, plastic plates etc). But, I'm also not rich either so if anyone knows any tasty mid-range Chinese restaurants please let me know!
Good Xinjiang place called Tumaris in the CBD good prices plus a show which has belly dancing and singing.
Huge rows of restaurants between Bexinqiao and Dongzhimen..always very crowded with locals but look a bit nicer than hole-in-the-wall places. Not sure of the price range though.
全聚德 the roast duck/Peking duck place. That's my friend (Canadian) 2nd favorite dine out when she visited China last year. Her favorite was having dumpling on the street in Xi'an.
I suppose it depends on your guests and only you will know that.
Personally when I first came to China the hole in the walls were frightening, (maybe a little too frightening) but I WANTED to see and feel the real deal China not a westernised bastardisation of it.
If I were you, first night, take them to a semi-westernised place at usual dinner time, then take them for a few drinks till a normal Chinese hour (midnight-ish) and then take them to a street BBQ. Judge what they like after that.
If you want to go back a few hundred years in time and experience a modern Chinese twist for the price of a meal back home, pop along to here - Baijia Courtyard. Suzhou Street Haidian About 200 yards north of Suzhoujie, line 10. The ambiance is amazing, not many tourists.
