I'm thinking of buying a really massive plant for my apartment, but I'm a little clueless about prices, where to buy and whether it's a hassle to keep them going (and insects, etc...).
Anyone have any recommendations?
I used to have over 300 house plants once at home. Then I got new cats, the old cats didn't bother the plants. Sad to watch a 20 yr old jade plant get trashed. I don't know what plants you'd raise here. I saw a purple wandering jew growing on a wall. Many tropical plants grow here which I had indoors. The only plants I've seen for sale have been cactus, something I never had much luck with, probably my house wasn't dry enough.Insects shouldn't be a problem, but a big plant may not last, better to grow your own. The roots get pot bound after a while, but new plants seem to thive better.
I do enjoy plants at my place, since I do like flowers, and have some rose bushes, gardenias, carnations and orchids. Also have maybe 3 cactuses (water then a little about once per month), and some fruit trees. From seeds I am growing avocados, mangos, oranges, lemon, tangerines, etc., hoping to have a small plot of land some day soon to plant an orchard.
Main problem for house plants (inside the house) is the lack of sunshine, which stops the clorophile production, leaves turn yellow and plant eventually die. If inside the house, you must take them out to balcony for a few days every week if want a pretty plant. Too much water is also a problem, only water them when soil is dry to touch. If tip of leaves turn yellowish or brown, to are using to much water. I fertilize them once per month, and if I see any insects (not often), I use mosquito spray to get rid of it.
I also love bonsais, and have 4 different ones now. I found a mimosa tree and with seeds I am growing one, hoping to make a bonsai out of it eventually.
It does take a few minutes each day, but to me is something I enjoy.
My advise is that dont go for it unless you are a well organised guy/gal and your interests lasts long...
My parents in law keep on buying new and big plants for the drawing room .. normal cost ~1000yuan.. but they dont take much care of them... and always a failure..
What i observe... no insect problem... but must water at regular intervals.. not less not more.. must give fertilizers as well... hard job..
Some apartments come with big plants. The one I had was one of them and so far I've managed to keep a few of them growing or maintaining their look. If you did get a big plant and you are worried about not being able to water it or let it get sunshine you should invest in those plant lights with the UV rays. It will help it last longer!
