I live in Shanghai and recently a China Telecom guy came and changed the wire in my apt for optic fiber and put also a new router at home. It was supposed to boost the internet speed. I requested for ID and he got it, he also had the contract and recently I saw him doing the same for other apartments in my building.
Speed didn't increase, downloads speed is the same, upload speed is slower. Many websites have became slower to load.
Since the day he put that I get sometimes intermittent internet service and some chinese websites are shown specially when trying to google something.
Does anybody know if this is just to keep us more checked about what we do and how we use internet?? I dont know if other people have had same experience but if you haven't changed that and they arrive to your home I'd strongly suggest you dont accept that.

If you think about it, the previous router you got was also provided by China Telecom, so whatever you got on the old one, it will be in the new one too. Basically, just changing from cooper wire (or the old phone wire) to fiber optic, and upgrading your router to one that will work with fiber optics will give you at best a marginal speed increase (maybe in the order of 0.05 Mbps). And since China Telecom measures only download speed, you should be close to whatever you contracted for.
If you are having interruptions in service, you should call them and complain. A close friend here had it, went thru the change, and ended up worse than you. He complained, and they sent a fellow in a couple of days to check his installation, and found a few mistakes in how the wiring was done, some was still cooper wire (not fiber optic), replaced that and a few couplers and the interruptions disappear, but the upload speed was and is still 0.62 Mbps out of a contracted 4 (before the change was 0.58), with dowload speed at 3.82 out of 4
