My roommate's bike was stolen last week (she left it at the subway station overnight apparently). While I know this is fairly common here, I'm still surprised anyone took the time to steal it, as it was a rusty 1980s frame with messed up wheels.
Meanwhile, a friend's motorbike was nearly stolen outside his apartment (inside his gated community) last month -- the alarm went off and he got down there to chase the thieves off. they've returned about 6-7 times since then, with the same results, although now my friend can't use the bike, as the thieves put their own locks on it. He suspects its the local guards who have been casing the place for things to steal.
Where do all of these bikes go? granted some of them could be resold, but who would want the old rusty one for example?Do they just junk it for a few RMB? Is it even worth investing in a bike here if it will eventually be stolen?
How many of you have had a bike stolen since living here? what do you do now?

My bike is such a piece of crap that I don't even need to lock it, nobody would 'want' to steal it. Somebody did steal it once but they brought it back the next day with a note attached telling me how sorry they were and how much they hoped my situation would improve in the future. They even fixed my back light.
They can resell the bikes easy, just change the key switch or take the tumblers out. I saw footage of guys stealing bikes, they just jerk the switch out and ride away. They should sell alarms with grenades. Jǐnggào, zhè zhǒng zìxíngchē jiàng zài 5 miǎo nèi zì huǐ
I had my bike for one day and my GF asked if she could borrow it for 2 weeks, does that count? She won't let me buy 2 bikes.
Hi, My bike was stolen also in Shanghai, front of metro station in the bicycle lock place. when I found the empty slot on my way back to home, i observe the surroundings. no camera, no bao'an around, but is the busy station, Jufeng road. so just give up to ask anyone anything.
When i was in Yiwu in previous 5 years, there i have been shorten for 1 electric scooter, i get new one, they take out the battery first, front of Futian market. I got new one battery and in few weeks later again whole scooter have been gone, front of my house, even locked. That's really sucks. In my country have problem s with Gypsies, but never in live have not been stolen as many things there, as here within few years.
it happens, even locked bikes are a target. The resale value is very little but if you go search around back street bike stores you can pick up a bike for less than 100, sometimes as little as 50rmb, think about it they steal 10 bikes a day, sell them for 10rmb thats 100/day 700/week 2800/month that's a pretty good wage, even half of that would be making serious cash for the thieves....
IMO just buy one of these bike from the alley, my friend did and was lucky had his bike for over 2 years, stolen then bought a new one, that was stolen within 3 weeks!
buy a second hand bike or motor bike,first-hands are very attractive and will always be stolen the way mine was stolen in the metro station 4 days after I bought it.
Not stolen, however I had been shopping for one, and paid 2,200 for it at 8pm evening time. Rode it home about 3 km. The next day it would work. So I pushed it back to the store, where may I add, he had the cheek to ask I pay 300 to fix it. I felt like fixing him. to be honest.
My mountain bike got stolen on campus...The new one goes with me to the classroom now, problem fixed...
Everyone says buy an old rusty piece of shit bike...but I ride mine far and I wanna enjoy it, not fix it every day, so I got a brand new shiny bike
