So went for a Korean meal last night and had one dish which was sweetcorn baked in cheese. So delicious that I had to finish most of it. Result? I couldn't even walk home and have spent the best part of today feeling rough in the stomach. As a cheese lover, this is a huge shame for me! Has this happened to you?
Yep! I went home for a holiday the first time I came to China ('08) and I hadn't had large amounts of cheese for about a year. I ate loads of the stuff the first few days and broke out in massive hives on my arms and legs and spent a large amount of time on the bog. Doc told me to cut down on the dairy until my body got used to it again.
Yes, my body does not tolerate Chinese 'cheese'. I'll be home in a week or two for some real cheddar.
he he I said: "cheddar" dammit!
I'm home now and eating tons of cheese and real yogurt... Love it . Most of it is feta though, not sure if it has milder effects...
Hehe, I said ''feta''!
Same problem. Knowing that the body needs to build up a tolerance makes me want to avoid the stuff for health reasons, which is terrible because I love the stuff.
Haha, I said "what what in the butt"
What does a suitcase full of various cheeses sell for in China?
Scandinavian:
We once brought a 1,5Kg block of cheese. It was a present to an aunt who as far as I know is the only one in the family who likes and actively seeks our cheese. We handed it to her at a 15 people round table dinner. The cheese was the topic of the conversation for most of the dinner.
I would think (based on European cheese prices) that you can sell the cheese for 3-4 times the price. There are actually wholesalers who sell big size cheeses in China, and when you buy e.g. a big wheel of French cheese the price is not quite as extreme as the small 100g packs you can get in the imported foods sections.
No, not at all. There is some hell expensive French cheese in OK quality in Carrefour and some decent Aussie cheddar. I still like cheese, I eat cheese with stuff like home made burgers, pizza and sandwiches made from home made bread. It is a valuable source of calcium.
If you study a bit of biology and evolution you will see that humans are pretty much the only animals that keep dairy as part of the diet after childhood. It's something we do because we like it rather than natural needs, at least in old days where life expectancy was lower so problems such as osteoporosis was not relevant. Cats, dogs, porcupines etc. are all lactose intolerant to some degree unless the people taking care of them have kept them ingesting dairy products when they stopped having milk from their mothers
We will also be prone to developing lactose intolerance by just staying away from it for a short while. I speculate that Jewism's views on dairy products is the reason why Jews are notoriously lactose intolerant.
It's probably just bad cheese.
You know how cheese goes all moldy? They probably just cut out the moldy part on the outside and served it to you. Why? Because there's no FDA inspectors here to check for that kind of thing, and Cheese can go bad rather easily compared to other foods.
When I visited my favorite mian bao shop yesterday, I saw they were offloading food crates from the truck. All the breads were just sitting out in the open inside of the blue crates without even a single piece of paper between the bread and the beat-up blue crate that was used to haul it to the shop. I thought they were like a USA bakery where they made their own food, boy was I wrong! They just pull the loaf fresh out of the oven, throw it in a blue crate without even wrapping it up or putting down a piece of paper, and ship it off to god-knows-where, and then sell it to you.
<3 China.
No problem, yes indeed same as previous reaction, but imported stuff on Fields or in fancy supermarkets, like Japan Plaza XTD, so no problem at all. BUT of course eat bunch of cheese a night, than you might have also problems with your stomach at your home country. Too much is always not good strategy.
