I would love to talk to someone about their experiences in a Chinese prison to get an idea of what life behind bars is like in this country. I'm sure there are so many interesting & f*cked up stories out there that would be so interesting to document. Have any of you ever spoken to someone who spent time in jail?

no but have spoken to plenty that belong in Gaol (jail)
I won't even answer such an uneducated question. Go to jail and find out.
You sound like a journalist or social anthropologist interested in personal accounts of events that most people are either afraid to talk about, don't have the stomach to talk about, or pooh-pooh (like some posters here claiming your question is uneducated).
Jail or "gaol" is a serious matter, and anyone who has ever landed in the slammer has a unique story to tell that, depending on who you are and what your motives are, is worth telling. Read The Innocent Man by John Grisham for a few insights. (And that goes for you, too, ironman - you might learn something.)
I met a mid-aged man who spent 3 or 4 years in prison once.He had a big tattoo on his arm but he behaved just like a normal nice guy.He told me he has a little daughter whose mom just got a divorce with him.Because of his crime record,he couldn't find a good job.So he decided to leave home for another place and make money for his family. But he can't take his daughter with him then he asked his sister-in-law to take care of her.
He didn't say why he was put in jail and what happened there. That's their own business and don't try to put salt on one's wound.
No, I haven't. It just goes to show you that people make mistakes, but sometimes never get to share their story. When I was in highschool they had a guest speaker who was in prison. Not here though.
