Two questions guys!!
1. How do you guys book air tickets for going back home?
The rates given in the official airline sites are insanely high. But at the same time I have heard about people booking it for cheaper rates. Say, for example, Sri Lankan Airlines or Cathay Pacific.
2. Does anyone know how to bag a students fare as well?

Priceline cannot be used unless the departure location is in the U.S., so disregard the above message.
You can use Orbitz, Kayak, Vayama, Travelocity, etc. There's also www.ticket777.cn
The prices on the airlines web sites can be high, but not always. You also have to be aware that e.g. KLM will give you a different price if you look at klm.nl or klm.com or other national sites. E.g. if you look for flights from China to US, make sure to look at airline sites in both countries.
It's worth using both the ticketing sites as well as the airlines web sites. It requires some effort to find the good deals on international flights.
another site than what Hulk mentions is www.momondo.com
And home is.... where?? (after all, depending on where you're going will decide on the options!)
I've tried a few different options for my flights home, and I've even gone one of the cheapest - but never again! For those extra couple of hundred dollars, it's worth the nicer flight and all!
Also, check out other options for your departure city. ie, it might end up being cheaper to fly to another Chinese city before heading out.
In any countries, try to find the Chinese agents, you'll sure to get the deal.
This is the very popular site we used, by the waym, I am a Chinese citizens, we know our country well.
You can look at this web site, too! All flights originate from HK, so I guess it depends how far in China you are from HK.

The answer to your questions depend on two factors:
1) How is your level of Chinese? (Or do you have a Chinese friend/co-worker who is willing to help you?)
2) Where is your home country?
International flight tickets bought in China are subjected to “luxury tax”, as a Chinese co-worker told me. For me, living in Austria, it is much cheaper to buy the tickets in the European Union rather than in China. (Please read carefully: I wrote “Austria”, the country of Mozart, not “Australia” ). I usually book the flight via the British site of Opodo http://www.opodo.co.uk/ (The prices on the Austrian site http://www.opodo.at/ are subjected to a “green tax” for the environmental protection.) Another option is to book your flight in a Chinese travel agency in your home-country! Because these agencies buy lots of tickets to/from China, they usually can offer a better price.
Still you can find reasonable priced tickets in China, but you have to go to a small agency and to bargain with them. This is where some knowledge of Chinese is necessary... Because these agencies can check prices on different dates, or even offer “split” tickets, i.e. leave China with airline A, return with airline B, you can really find a bargain.
Last, you can try to avoid the large airports: Flights from Nanjing rather than Shanghai Pudong International may be cheaper, and it just takes 2 hours from Shanghai Central Station to Nanjing by train.
