Your question is already answered in this question/answer:
What do I need to get a work (Z) visa?

Thanks, but I don't need a Z visa. I think I need a D visa? I stay here overseeing the production of our products before we ship them overseas. I work for a Canadian company that hires a local factory to make our products.
Do you mean a residence permit? Once you arrive in the city where you will be living and have a apartment you go to your nearest police station with your passport and prove of address (in most cases they will need to landlord with you)
The police just loge you into the system and give you a paper.
If you're working for a short term period in Shanghai, you don't get a residence permit neither a residence visa.
From what you described in your comment, you're entitled to get a F Business Visa. The F visa grants you the possibility to live in China for a duration of usually 6 months-1year according to your project. However, you won't be considered as having a residency here in China.
There is no visa called D visa. What you need as indicated in your comment above is probably a temporary residence permit. Follow Fritze's suggestion to get your temporary residence permit that you were supposed to get within 24 hours of your arrival.
