Q: How dangerous is Guangzhou?

I was thinking of moving to Guangzhou for work, but some of what my Chinese friends have said about safety is worrying me.

It is like any other place. Low crime does not mean that crime does n ot exist, westerners are particularly tempting targets, etc.
Just use your common sennse like in any other city.  Best of luck to you!

smiley I lived in Guangzhou for almost five years and I can say that it has been one of the safest cities I've ever lived in. I lived in Tian He District then  in Zhu Jiang New Town. There are CCTV cameras every 10 yards or so on the street. People are nicer in the southern than here in the eastern part of China Smile

It is safe to walk on the street even in the wee hours of the morning.

Guangzhou is a modern city... it was the richest city in China two or three years ago. If you were to live there, try finding a house in Zhu Jiang New Town for it is a nice location to live in. It is close to the area where the Asian games took place back in 2010.

The cost of living in Guangzhou is way cheaper than in Shanghai and Beijing. Our three bedroo mplace in TianHe District was about 4,200RMB/month. The two bedroom place in Zhu Jiang New Town was about 5,500RMB a month.

The taxi fare is about 7.50/8.00 RMB.(It might be different now cause I left the city a year ago).

But of course it is always wise to take extra precautions/ or to be alert at all times... whichever city in the world you are in :-)

Good luck!

I agree with PrettyNyssa.  I have lived (on and off) in Guangzhou for almost 6 years and it has always been very safe.  However, if you go looking for trouble, then the locals will be more than happy to help you find it.  :)

But it is a great city.  I consider it my adopted home town.  There is lots to do, great food, wonderful people and even a branch of the Hash House Harriers for exercise & beer.

Tianhe is an upscale district so you won't run into too much trouble there. GZ in general is a nice place and as long as you play it smart then you you won't have any problems.

A:Well, doing a medical exam ahead of time wasn't actually necessary. I signed a promissary note stating that I was in good health and would do the result once I arrived in China. This was enough. -- norninman
