Like you, I imagine, I've had some bad experiences: get quoted a low enough price, the movers will haggle you and try to keep tricking you until the end. Try to get a reputable company and the prices are way high.
Whenever I call around, I only ever get high and low quotes, never anything in the middle and reasonable. What do you suggest? Cross my fingers, crinkle my brow?

if you have too many stuff to be moved, just find a famous moving company, like crown, DB schenker, or Santa Fe to help you pack, move and delivery.
if you don't have too much stuff to move, just let your chinese friend call local moving company. it's not so difficult. good luck.
Ask the building security officer, they have all those guys in their pocket.
Don't pay until you check your stuff. Number your boxes and make a list of contents, easier to unpack and know that you have everything. And seal all your boxes with tape and mark the tape. I would ride shotgun with the moving van, you don't want to loose everything.
My uncle moved from Canada to NZ. I helped him crate all his stuff to ship. It never made it to the container. He lost everything.
If you're moving to another place in the city should be as simple as looking for a van and talking to the guy. They usually have a sign in their window with a number you can call. In my experience for moving across town it costs about 200-500 depending on how much stuff you have, the distance and if you want to sit in your ass or if you're gonna pitch in with lifting stuff.
