Q: How do you go about setting up wireless for the home in China?

Can you buy a package online or do you have to go somewhere to get it installed etc.?

frist you have to subscribe contract with a communication operator like China Mobile(中国移动).China Telecom(中国电信) or China Railcom(中国铁通)and so on. and you will get a moden to log in internet.
second you could buy a wireless route and connect with the moden, after set up the software ,then you can use wireless in your home.

by the way, some wireless route have moden functions, so you could only buy a route is enough. Smile

My best advice, if you don't speak enough chinese, is get a Chinese friend to call. For 1,800 kuai we got high speed internet installed for the year, none of that phoning to recharge it bollocks.

Pretty easy, I think Telcom is the most reliable, although sometimes Unicom has good service, the China Railway company is the most unreliable connection. Just go to your local phone service center and ask for 宽带kuān dài,prices range for 600 to 1800 per year, depending on your city. When you purchase the yearly service, they will come to your home and install everything for you (even if your computer is n English). IMHO buy the cheapest service they offer, because the connection speed is almost the same.

I bought a combination modem router then got a friend to organise the internet company to connect it to the landline. Modem router cost 260 rmb (I got a 300 mb/s faster one with certain features so you can pay much less) and the internet connection was 500 rmb for the year, at 4 MB/s which for me and most is well fast enough. a full size DVD about 6-8 GB will take a few hours only to download at this speed. The wireless network is great, it allows you to put the modem router out of the way and not have wires everywhere and you can then connect your laptop (if wireless) to it. I also have a desktop computer and a USB wireless stick for that, and my phone also uses the network when I am at home.

When you get the modem router make sure it uses the latest 802.11 n protocol, then it is compatible with the older g/b/ etc protocols. Win 7 starter will not read some log in screens if the computer is in English and the modem router is Chinese, I wanted to bring my one from OS but no room in bags.

Make sure that you password lock and encrypt the wireless, it is also good to allow only certain MAC addresses, so other devices cannot access the signal.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
