I was on skype to one of my friends at home, and before logging off, did the China-style 'bye-bye'. She just stared at me and told me to hurry on back... haha. It's become a habit now though, I can't shake the baibai!
I don't do that. But I did recently have a phone conversation with one of my friends who've also visitied me in China where we discussed something similar. See my friend, on day 2 in China, learned that the proper way to start a phone conversation is to scream "WEEEEIIIII" as loudly as one possibly can, so he'd one that ever since (going on a couple of years now) What we talked about last was that he called me while he was in a supermarket or something like that and, despite being around other people, still, to be courteous to me, yells as loudly as he can when I pick up the phone. He obviously thinks it is the stupidest think ever, since he keeps doing it, and turns out, when you do it in public, back home in Scandinavia, 2 seconds after, you have to apologize to innocent bystanders.
What 'bye bye' is this exactly? Tell me you don't tilt your head to the side smiling and do a peace sign. She might not call back.
I lived in China for many years........now I'm back home and if I say "bye bye" to anyone they stare as well. It's childish and must be stopped immediately! Something tells me you secretly enjoy it though...carry on little fella!
I never say 'bye bye" in a "china voice", not in China, not anywhere. It sounds like a little girl.
I forbid my male students to say it.
Try to break away from the fifty year old text books they use here. Oh, and the recent Chinese brand text books that are based on the fifty year old text books.
See you later
