Is it some kind of local net? Like on the same bus, or same apartment? I don't see the point. Why not just go with the internet, you know, the big one?

weixin/wechat is using the big interwebs. the deal is that you only have your own little sandbox to play around in, you can only communicate with your friends list. as a direct messenger this is like most others. the social part of it, "Moments", is purely for your friends to see what you're writing.
the Chinese government is actively monitoring if anyone writes anything iffy on wechat.
technically wechat is pretty shitty software. the iPad version does not scale to larger screen sizes. for Android they are distributing new releases outside of the app market (meaning they are not screened by some nerd at Google, so it's easier for them to sneak in backdoors and virusses) the app itself is bloatware and eats up your phones memory
It only exists for mobile platforms. I think it sucks be sadly it is needed as it has so widespread usage, also outside of China

There's no iPad version. That's the iPhone version running on an iPhone.
Weixin or WeChat is the new way to stay in touch, didn't you know? Forget Weibo or even Facebook. If you're living in China and have friends here Weixin is the number one way to see what people are doing (in the moments section similar to the news feed on facebook), send free pics and voice messages and even send videos. There's also a dating element to it where you can "throw a bottle" into the vast ocean of anonymous users and wait for someone to reply.
It's simlar to MSN/Skype/etc but for cellphones. You install the app and you can add your friends who also have it, then theres the "people around me" that shows other users in your area based on their GPS, so you can have a conversation with random people or maybe even hook-up.
download wechat....it's the english version and you can understand it
