Q: How far do you travel to work each day?

I hope to get a job in only one city. I have been interveiwed for a job. The accomodations are about an hour away from work by bus. I'm not very happy about this. Being a smaller city the pay is less and I do not care. The time to travel each day, for me is a problem. It also gives pick pockets etc more time to find me. Two hours a day on a Chinese bus just seems like it will not make for a pleasnt day.Do you travel long distances to go to work?

Yeah sure do but the subway takes me to work faster than a bus or car would ever do. Traveling is a good thing just as long as I'm not doing the driving.

It depends on where I stay. If I stay at the school apartment (which I do two nights a week), it's about a ten minute walk to class, but I usually stay downtown, where I'm about 15 kilometers from the campus. In that case, I drive my wife's car.

Is there anything closer to the school? Usually, the living arraingments are either on campus or pretty close by.

Most companies will give you a housing allowance,if your not happy with the distance you need to travel, just tell them before you sign a contract usually about 1000 rmb for a small city which is enough a month

My work has me going to about 10 different locations throughout the city (and twice I had to go to the suburbs, but that's not common).

3 of the locations are close, about 30 mins, some are far.  The far ones I take a taxi, collect taxi receipts and get refunded for.  But they only refund me for the winter.  When the weather is better I have to bus it.  3 of the locations are pretty ridiculous bus rides, so I taxi it up anyways for them (a taxi in Harbin costs about $3.50 American for most of my rides).  It's not ideal, but I figure my time and comfort is worth it.

I travel 30 min each way by car. I have it pretty tough...I have a driver that drives me too and from work.
You should demand this service as part of your contract.

15 mins if I have the car pick me up.
40-60 if I walk (always end up stopping for street food and beer for some reason so don't know the actual walk time).
35 if I wait for the bus.

About 30 minutes each way for me when I was on my last assignment.  Now it is about 5 steps from the bed to my desk.

Yeah, it's just a 5-7 minute walk to the classroom. However, I usually eat breakfast in the cafeteria, so add a few more minutes to that.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
