Q: How to get Dad to visit?

I'm trying to convince my dad that China is a really cool place and that he should come visit me here.  I know it can be expensive to get here, but since I speak Chinese and know my way around I can get him pretty good deals in terms of food, housing, etc.  What would you say to your family/friends to convince them that they want to come see you in China?

I have had a few visitors.  I offer them free stay and food at my apartment, they will pay for everything else.  Yes, airfares could be a high expense to get here, but not having to pay for hotel or food tends to make the airfare look smaller.  Funny in a way, at least with my guests, those that were more reluctant to come, can not wait until next vacation to come back again.

I do explain to them that in China, there are many beautiful and different places to see, very much worth the trip over.  I also suggest to them that a 3 to 4 weeks stay for the first time is best.  So far, only one close friend has not taken me on my offer.

Keep bugging him. That's all you can do. My Dad visited before I was married cause work sent him and he took a few days off at the end and we hung out, it was my mom that was the hard sell. She came for the wedding and that's what it took.

I am in the same boat trying hard to get dad out here but to no avail. He can even get free flights as far as Japan but still can’t budge him.  Ex-military he fought in Vietnam still thinks all of Asia is like it was then.Oh well mum said she would come and bring his credit card.

My brother came out to visit me a few weeks ago.  He just wanted to see me being family been a long time and didnt care that it was China he was coming.

If you said back home you said you were going to China most people would not think it was a great choice for a holiday as not your typical beach holiday.   But if you go to China to see things like the underground army, and great wall a wonder of the world i think everyone would want to see that stuff before they die.  Sell the visit as seeing you and a cultured experience of a lifetime.

A:No, it's not allowed to work under RP at 2nd job! I'd say, Z visa/RP sponsor can have an objections to your part-time job. I did the same at my English teaching in China and elsewhere, butT ... I casually mentioned at my prime job, some kindergarten or another school asked me to work with them part-time. Then, my Q: "Is that permitted?" ...  Answer from RP sponsor was always "Yes, but you can't be late or miss the classes at our school ..." with my reply: "No, our work schedule has a priority, and I'll arrange classes at kindergarten only in my free time." When I cleared that, I was undertaking any extra teaching hours at other schools and private students in my free time.Sometimes, teachers at my prime job asked me if I'm willing to have some extra classes elsewhere.I accepted after the talk with School's principal. I suggest, you test the felling at your Z/RP sponsor and once you see they don't object, you can work at 2nd job. Keeping your 2nd job as a secret from your employer won't work, 'cause you're laowai and Chinese know exactly what you do in your free time. However, despite your employer's agreement for extra work, you are still in violation of Chinese Labour law, and even if your sponsor agrees to your extra work, you can still get in trouble, because it's clearly written (somewhere ... ) that under Z/WP, one can work only at the Z-sponsor and nowhere else. Penalties ... I'd say, there won't be any warnings and you'll be required to exit China in short Exit time.It never happened to me, so I can't really advice how is when manure hits the fan ...  -- icnif77
