Q: How long is the train from Nanning to Hanoi?

Direct train, with daily departures from Nanning at 6:40 pm, arrival to Hanoi next day at 7:00 am.
400 km distance in 12 hours? That's 'bring booze w/ you' train.
The trip is an overnighter one. It is not the distance that takes so many hours, but the fact that you are crossing international borders, and you must clear Customs and Immigration exiting China and also entering Vietnam, which is time consuming. It is also the fact that the distanced between rails on railroad tracks (or gauge) is different between countries to prevent invasions, so at the border, you either change trains or each car is lifted and wheels and shaft changed (no longer done). I have heard that now at the border station near DeTian Falls the same track goes all the way to Hanoi, so no train change is needed even if you musty exit train at border for exit/entry procedures. Be warned that the train station in Hanoi is not near downtown, and taxi drivers will be out for your scalp.
