Q: How many minimum days left in residence permit, before re-entry allowed?
I have to leave China for a brief period.
My return flight, back into Chinas, is in 3-4 weeks.
My residence permit will expire in 2 months.
Would that be cutting it too close?
Would the customs officials give me a hard time?
Would they refuse re-entry?
if you stay 1 second after your RP expires then you will get a hard time.
I always made sure I left at least a week in advance of my RP expiring, but was in and out several times with no problem.
unless you have done something that is flagged to chinese customs officials there should not be a problem

It happened to me, once ... in 2014 or 15 ...
Plane from end-of-RP city (Tianjin) had more than 10h delay at take-off, and I came to the HK's exit Luohu some 7 hours after the RP expiration date.
In real, I came to the exit crossing just on time or maybe only an hour late, but Luohu is closed overnight (10pm - 6am), which I didn't anticipate.
There were two unexpected things happened at that exit: "Flight's delay with closed Luohu overnight on the top."
I had a decent, real excuse for the cops next morning, but still I was put in a side office for some 3 or 4h and then she-cop had a short lecture with '.. and make sure, that will never happen again! ..', and I was let go without anything on my record.
At least, at the new Z visa application and following reentry to China nobody ever mentioned anything about the delayed exit.
However, I had very bad, un-eased feeling at the following Z visa appearance in Wanchai ...
It is much, much wiser and safer to exit at least a day or even a few days ahead of the RP expiration date.

No, you are permitted to reentry China anytime before or on the RP expiration date ... and same, you have to exit before or on the last expiration day.
However, it's always wiser to exit or re-enter few days before the end of RP.
I ain't sure, how is now with the RP extension. In my time, you had to apply for RP extension a month before the expiration or exit China before the RP's last day.
