I see lot's of ads for Valentine's Day, are they targeted at expats or locals? Are Chinese girls big on the whole romantic Valentine's Day thing?

Commercially, they are pushing for Feb 14 as Valentine's Day here nowdays, but in China it is celebrated later on the year, I think it is in August if I recall right. Each year you see more advertising around Feb 14 that the previous.
My wife is aware of both days and expects me to recognize both as well. She says I must do it because it's a "Face" thing for her. Her coworkers wait to see what will happen on Feb 14th since she is married to a Canadian. Forgetting is not an option.
As hard as I try, romance seems to be a secondary aspect for her. Oh she appreciates it but it's more to "show off" than anything else if you ask me.

Hahaha! She got you on the "face" argument, you can't win that one.
i dont' know,but i know i can't forget it,in case i don't want a lovely times these days with my girl...
It's as popular as you want to make it out to be. Just like halloween or christmas. Some people will celebrate it and some people won't. It's all up to the individual person. Some people think it's just another day. Which one will you end up being. And yes it is targeted for both since both types of people now live in China.
If it is pracitced in your country, I think it is a nice gesture towards the Chinese person you like, if you are actually interested in them.
As a westerner, I'm ALWAYS expected to celebrate it, and in a romantic way. Every single year. And for the western AND Chinese valentine's days. And no matter how many times I say it's not a European tradition and that it has no value whatsoever, they won't listen.
