Q: An idea to avoid recruiters, Admin?
I heard about a story of an agent screwing over a teacher really bad. Basically this teacher is no longer employable in China.
We need to stop using agents period.
But many teachers do not know how to contact schools directly, and finding the info can be very difficult.
What if there was a special branch of the answers section dedicated only to listing the contact details of schools? Users would supply websites, emails or phone numbers of schools they know or came across.
It would have to be sortable according to public school, university, training school, primary school, middle school, high school and then according to location.
This would be a grand way for us to help each other avoid agents all together. It would not be a school review site (those are being banned and targeted) But if a user is willing to be contacted about their experience with a school they could include their username under a 'contact me for my experience' header and a user can PM them. If talking negative about a school you must show actual irrefutable proof. I have pictures about my experiences with a few shitty schools.
Agents, CFTU and the Chinese government is making it difficult for teachers to warn each other about problem schools. That new law where they can stop you at the airport if someone makes a claim against you is the direct result of their efforts. So we must be smart.

I forgot to mention. The site should also have some basic information about the law.
1. You must enter on a Z visa in order to work. (this is the first step to a school / agent screwing you over)
2. Your visa must be processed in the city where you will live and work. (I didn't know this until my 4th year in China, but luckily the school that tried to do this to me had other problems so I was able to leave before the visa was processed)
3. If I a school breaks any of these laws in hiring you, you are the one who is punished severely. (banning)
4. Working on a Family visa or working at another school part time is just as illegal as working on a tourist or student visa.

great sentiment however if there is no money in it ,I doubt Admin would care
all we can do is report scams on the forum and hope the message gets out there
again Great idea and don't be put off by my negatively
good luck to you

Well we finally agree on something, Ted but keep in mind that most all of those agents buy advertising on every expat website including ECC. And the people you love to trash and bash (CFTU) have been singing your tune the longest and the loudest for years. No website is going t turn away advertising dollars. See http://ChinaScamBusters.com

Almost: the CFTU reports teachers, who complain, back to their schools. Then the schools can claim grievance against those same teachers. You are the problem . You guys are probably the ones responsible for websites that slander teachers.

If it's a website domain run outside the jurisdiction of China, it is likely to be blocked. But there could be a more simple way to avoid firewall information suppression. Why does it have to be a website? It could just be an e-mail address run by a dedicated staff member. If I mail them asking for info on schools in my province or city, they could mail back with a zipped plain text file of the latest resource. That resource can also contain warnings about shady schools, since it all falls outside Chinese jurisdiction.

Email (foreign) has been blocked in Xinjiang for almost 4 weeks now. I was able to set up a vpn, thanks to a fellow poster, and still email is blocked. YouTube works fine.
I agree with Ted. Recruiters are not needed at all and should be avoided. But people abroad are intimidated about working in BIG China and/or are lazy. They keep the agents in business. So for those newbies I recommend this solution:
http://eslwatch.info/china-2/news-98/603-china-newsflash/12097-how-to-ch...
I also agree with Ted that there needs to be a way to put a page up here at ECC about 'LEGAL REQUIREMENTS". Until this great idea becomes reality, you can download a copy of China's Labor and new 2013 visa laws in English here:
http://www.bjstuff.com/forum/topics/15-free-anti-scam-weapons-for-expat-...
Concerning SAFEA, they do very little to help foreigners with the issues Ted raised and embassies are not allowed to get involved in labor disputes. So in short, if a newbie doesn't do their own homework they will learn everything the hard way in China.

Fuck that, dude. Ted spoke out against the CFTU, he's dead to us until he undergoes The Cleansing.
While I agree in general that processes and laws have to be in place to ensure a smooth and timely job search, I can't see how this can be implemented. Frankly current policies are subject to interpretations and mood swings of officials. Who is to tell which is the actual law governing foreign recruitment? It will take years to implement and enforce if ever at all. Even then, it'll still be twisted and tailored to each province such that go-betweens still make money out of it. So long as there is demand, there will be a constant supply of scammers out there.
I agree. We need to have a section on this website dedicated to the LAWS OF CHINA REGARDING FOREIGN TEACHERS. We need a clear page that outlines the laws. Nobody needs to get scammed.
Face it, we're always going to have scamming recruiters, but if we just posted a big message regarding Chinese law... and plastered it on every page (on the side bar), then it would help so much.
expatlife26:
I wonder if there is some kind of liability issue there. It's so hard to keep on top of everything and the rules are different for every province/city.
definitely would be great if there was some kind of resource like that.
