My GF and me decided to take a few days off and get some R & R in Guangzhou. So, came down here and got a room at China Hotel. Pretty nice place do, a bit on the expensive side. But everything was peaches and cream until last night, after dinner, around 7:30 pm.............
We decided to take a walk after dinner, and to stop at Starbucks for coffee and a smoke. So, as we exited the hotel and turned right towards Starbuck, we noticed a bunch of young looking Ladies on the sidewalk, hanging out individually or in small groups. Well, to my surprise and amusement, they were not strolling or enjoying the night air and moon, but seeking customers, and quite aggressively.
At Starbuck we got coffee and sat on a table outside so could smoke. My mistake, we became the target of almost every one "walking" on the sidewalk. The propositions were constant, and in a way offensive by not respecting the fact that my GF was right there next to me. She finally blew up, and a shouting match ensued between my GF and the street walkers.
I have no idea what was exchanged, but words flew loud and clear for all to hear, and for almost 10 minutes, until a Policeman arrived and the street walkers disappeared. I was aware that this type of activity was sort of allowed in certain areas of the city, but never seen it so openly done, so early in the evening, in front of a major hotel in Guangzhou. How can the hotel allow this to go on, and why the Police tolerate it. According to employees of Starbuck, there are arguments and even some cat fights almost every night, yet no one seems to put an end to a very deplorable and ugly situation. Why is that ?
Because I'm positive that the hotel and the local police chief get their own cut.

Sure your right. We had a similar thing when we were in Beijing a couple of months ago. Within 15 minutes of getting to our room there was a call from someone offering special services. During our eight night stay there cards popped through the door offering the same on three seperate nights. The funny bit was on the hotel paperwork a bit asking us to report any illegal activity, including prostitution. I guess the manager was picking up a nice addition to his salary.
The China hotel area is pretty famous for that sort of thing. The girls there can get really aggressive since there is a lot of competition. The hotels allow it because they will actually see a dramatic decline in customers when they actively block the girls. At least that is what a couple hotel GM friends have told me.
The basic rule is as long as the girls behave themselves within the hotel, then they can do as they please outside of the hotel. But it does kind of suck if you happen to be out with your lady around that area at night. Around 10-11 it gets really bad as the girls get really desperate for customers and they can get quite nasty.

Heck, if they would mind their business with unescorted fellows, maybe I would live and let live. But no one is safe from approach, just need to be a foreigner. And if your Lady accompanies you, it can become quite embarrassing......
I was really shocked by this, since I had no idea it was going on, and it was only 7:30 pm.
Well, another example of how accommodating things could be in China with the proper "offer and guangxi"
Something similar continues to happen to me but not in the way you have just experienced. Mine is, with my wife and I strolling down the road, ladies come to me and say, I'm hungry and cold can you help me. They are young and dressed nicely, my wife always blows up, it's like she's invisible. Is there no standards among these type of people
