Q: international travel is a better educator than school? your thoughts?

preached this to my kids, but only 1 of 3 has accepted it as meaningful.  he is the most successful to date.

most certainly a wonderful addition to basic education     skip a week or 2 or 3/year and travel   better off for it.

School for intellectual development, travel for social development.

You need to interact with people from different social, economic, cultural and racial backgrounds in order to become a worldly person.

Have you ever wondered why the Chinese in general are so uncool and awkward in their interactions with Foreigners? because they lack this worldly social development.

In the West, we have the chance to meet and interact with people from various racial and cultural backgrounds on a normal basis, so we are more at ease with people in general.

I think it is; but it should be done after secondary education is completed. I say this because we need something to compare, and we need to understand our own social environment. We also need to be able to form critical opinions. A child must be interested in the differences. Many probably won't be interested unless the traveling takes them away from school. Even then they will take their cell phones with them.

I know the popular answer these days is to say yes but I'm going to say no.

Or at the very least a very tepid "maybe in certain circumstances"

I mean do you really gain much education by sitting on a tour bus and going to various places taking a photo and being shipped off to the next place? probably not.

Do you really gain much by going to a beach in an exotic place? probably not.

That's not to say you can't really really enjoy those things but they aren't necessarily valuable education. Travel is kinda pedastalized as this quasi-spiritual enlightening experience and it can be but not the way most people do it.

Most of the time it's more like "Ok, I can take a really amazing vacation this year or I can buy a new car or I can sock my money away into investments" It's just a choice on how you spend your disposable income...no more no less.

It depends on the travel...

two weeks on a beaxh in Thailand getting off your tits isn't going to broaden your outlook much (though depends what you're off your tits on!)

Traveling slowly for long never, maybe working a bit on the way May teach you things if you're willing to learn. I spent 6 months fruit picking round France in my late 20's and learnt a few things.

Im for it.
When I was 11 my folks took us to Europe for 3 months.
I think that sparked my interest in History.
The museums in the UK and Germany were miles ahead of anything in Australia and probably still are.
Still did school work during the time there too.
For my Kids they get to learn about China and we talk about history in C h ina .
Maybe next year we can go to Europe for a change.

It can be extremely valuable. If your job requires you to work with people from varied cultural lifestyles, or you need to work with people internationally, of course this is needed.

For personal growth, it is valuable as well. The more you understand the similarities and difference of people from around the world, you gain better perspectives of people and society. Tolerance, love, and a host of other personal development traits are enriched. We can begin to appreciate people for who they are, break down stereotypes we had been taught, and accept the many differences in people.

It does not have to be world travel to far flung exotic places. Back in America, I know people who have never been out of their region from their hometown. A trip through the states is quite eye-opening.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
