Seems the whole Chinese media is going bonkers over this... but what does it actually mean?

I'm not sure the only one out of those two that I've ever used was Youku. Youku has become quite slow recently and I'm not sure why. It could be the emerging of the two that caused this to happen but again not to sure. For me Youku is more popular than todou so if the chinese media was going bonkers over this it probably had to do with something with Todou and not Youku!
It's not a big deal for me, because I'm not Chinese. They're probably worried about monopolization, which I don't think is a big deal now. What are they really monopolizing? They don't enforce copyrights. You can upload basically anything. Youtube is the most popular in the world, and sometimes I don't like how strict it is about copyrights, but I still use it. There are still other video websites such as Dailymotion.
Meh. When Baidu is ready to get serious about streaming video, the central government will simply assure that YouDou is pushed out of the market. Family connections and all. Enjoy it while it lasts.
