Q: I've read there are fewer than 1m laowei living in China. Is this correct? How many legally?

And an additional question....  How many Chinese citizens were born in a country other than China?

I know that in Australia these days that figure is about 25%.  And I'm sure the figure for quite a few EU countries would be on the high side too.

So I guess I'm asking three questions here...

Feel free to answer any, or all.

I found this source, quoting 0.6 millions foreigners in China for 2011

http://shanghaiist.com/2011/04/30/total_number_of_foreigners_in_mainl.php

That's 0.0461% for you, all nationalities put together  Let's double that number and round it generously, it's still 0.1%. Counting the naturalized Chinese citizen won't change the number, they account for roughly 5000 people.

Thanks for those answers above.  Relative to the entire population foreigners amount to a miniscule amount.  No wonder we get the stare treatment, especially in cities off the beaten track, such as mine.
