Q: Just installed 360 杀毒 anti-virus onto my laptop and now the screen is blank...help!

First things first, I'm a bit of a Luddite when it comes to this kind of thing.

I already have Norton installed into my computer, and that was doing fine until yesterday when a friend of mine recommended this Chinese 360 program which he said would protect me from all the "nasty Chinese stuff'. Anyway, after installing this software and turning my laptop off for the first time, my screen went completely blank when I rebooted.

When I turn the computer on the power lights still flicker, the hard drive hums as does the disk drive, and everything seems normal - only the screen itself is black as the night sky. Could 360 have done something nasty to computer? Has it mixed up with Norton and caused chaos? Or is there something wrong with my laptop all together?

If you are using Windows Restore, roll back your computer a couple of days prior to the installation. Get rid of 360, get rid of Norton. Purchase ESET a/v and install SpyBot Search and Destroy (free!). Those two are all you need to protect yourself from any nastiness out there.

Thing is I can't access that as when I turn on the computer the screen displays nothing.

Do you have a restore disc? Have you tried pushing ESC/F8/F10 or whichever key is normally used to get into the setup mode? Does the screen flicker at all? I would doubt that 360 would damage your o/b video...maybe dumped the driver...but there should be something. Try hooking up an external monitor and see if that helps.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot. No flickering, just darkness. I'm wondering if it is the video card? It's quite an old computer by 2013 standards (got it in 2010)

I was helping a friend sort out his computer yesterday and 360 was on there together with a load of other garbage that came with it. Amongst other things  we got rid of 360 and its associated junk and installed the free version of AVG after we did a full scan of the computer and AVG picked up several viruses and trojans that 360 missed. I would get rid of it and put on a more reliable anti-virus. I rely on AVG and  Malwarebytes and to date have had no problems at all.

360 is garbage. As a rule of thumb, if there is a western alternative it is always better. (not just with computers, also with rice, pets, cars, cucumbers, tea, bricks etc)

Traveler:

China invented all of them, and the Chinese versions are better.

That was dumb.  Just like you would never wear a Jissbon condom when you should have worn a Durex, or eating FCK (real chicken shop in GZ) when KFC is just on the other side of the street.  You know the western product is always going to be safest bet. Norton is shitty, but installing 360 on top of it was like mixing fire with gasoline. Did you know Microsoft Windows 7 and 8 have a free anti-virus and malware protection software that is proven to be superior to both Norton and 360?

Now that everyone has ridiculed you on here...

1.  Can you still see the boot menu? or anything upon startup?

1a. If no, plug computer into another monitor or TV and see if you get any response.  If nothing, sounds like the hardware crapped out on you at a coincidental time.

1b.  If yes, run your computer in safe mode, which will disable shitty software and display drivers.  Every computer is different, but sometimes jamming the F keys, especially F12 will bring it up, otherwise check the computer manufacturer website.  From safe mode you can delete out your install of 360.  May have to dig deep, last I remember you have to uninstall 2 or 3 products to fully get rid of it, and even then it might leave some residue on your hard drive.

2.  If you cant get to the desktop whatsoever, I hope you got a partition of Windows on it, or some backup discs.  You will need to reinstall Windows, which of course will delete anything sitting on your hard drive you haven't backed up.  You can always pull out the HDD carefully and put it into an enclosure so a friend can retrieve the files you want backed up before wiping.  An enclosure can be bought in any Computer tech mall.  Once you are to the point of no return, use your backup partition or DVD's (or a bootleg copy of Windows if you had no backup of Windows), and wipe and reinstall to a nice clean working computer.

IIRC, if was with 360 that QQ had a misadventure with. QQ used to have 360 integrated as a security feature in their chat software a few years back, but they found out that the antivirus company installed Trojans on the user's machine and also recorded convos. 360 refused to remove the Trojan and QQ stopped their partnership.

My girlfriend had 360 installed and scan with Malwarebytes revealed three Trojans on her laptop.

AVG and Avast a great free alternatives. Norton, like McAfee are just highly commercialized products that will clog your computer.
