I'm starting to think about where to go when I have the chance to travel in China, and will happily take any advice I can get!
Obviously, everyone knows the major tourist traps (great wall, forbidden city, terracotta warriors, gorges etc), but what about places that aren't on the tourist trail. Is anyone willing to share their favourite secret destination?

Go to Shenzhen and take the bus that goes from Shenzhen to Hong Kong. You can see a lot of that part of the country. Hong Kong may not be lesser known but not everyone has traveled that route to get to Hong Kong. It is really fun and the service is excellent. They are very friendly too and the drop off point is close to all the shopping malls by walking distance or once you get to hong kong you can take the subway line to the inner city.
I biked through Guizhou and the moutains were lovely, and the people were great. A chance to see some places that arent affected so much my overdevelopment. There are also some towns to see some minorities and their culture. Sanjiang and around there has the Dong Ethnicity, famous for carpentry. Kaili and the One-Thousand-Miao-Households to see the Miao Ethnicity.
Dandong is just across the bridge from N korea. It is a nice travel spot for a couple days. The only problem is that its kinda out of the way.
There is Kaiping in guangdong. It has old european style buildings and lookout towers that were used to watch out for bandits. (a UNESCO site I think)
Qingchong mountain was a good hike if you are anywhere close to Chengdu Sichuan. You can stay in Dujiangyan, where there is a famous irrigation system that is over 2000years old and is still used.
South of Chengdu is Leshan (the massive sitting buddha that is carved into a cliffside) an Emei Mountain. a little touristy, but still a good place if you are in the area.
There are tons of other places too, but these are the ones I know about. Good luck and Happy Trails!!!

Thanks man, this is exactly the sort of stuff I was looking for.
You are going to travel alone or with friends? I would like to recommend Roads Less Travel to you. There are 15 places which are known less by people but are defintely beautiful worthy of traveling to.

Probably just with my partner, but always keen to meet people along the way, of course! Thanks for the link, some of those places look gorgeous!
I would like to recommend Yunnan province. Especially Lijiang Ancient town.
Yunnan, which is located in southeast of China, has around 20 minority. Every race has their own language, culture and religion. The tour guider will tell you lots of interesting story about them.
And there the sky is really blue……I want to go there again
