Q: Is a Letter of Invitation only used for a Z-visa application?
Is it necessary to first purchase a plain ticket and then do the visa application?

Please do NOT purchase a plane ticket until you have received the official Letter of Invitation with Work Authorization and until you have been issued a Z visa to enter the PRC. Anything but everything can go wrong in the process and as we all know who live here, if something can wrong, it surely will.
Haaike:
But isn't the plane ticket a prerequisite for applying for the Z-visa?

Haaike, kind friend, what I said is this: don't even think about a plane ticket until the Z visa / invitation letter has been secured and the visa has been processed. With a Z visa/invitation letter, the Consulate / Embassy will not ask you for a plane ticket. With an L visa / F business visa, these days, the Consulate / Embassy may or just might ask you for a plane ticket. Rules for L and F visas have tightened a bit; rules for the Z visa have essentially remained the same.
Booking a plane Ticket and Purchasing a plane ticket are two different things. If for visa purpose i will advise you just to book a plane ticket..then on that basis you can apply for visa ..once visa will be approved..you can confirm the booked ticket by making payment..
As far as invitation letter is concerned..for every purpose there is different kind of invitation letter..for example..F visa needs a invitation letter from the concerned company or institution in which they will mention your duration of stay and purpose as well as your detail like name, passport number, date of issue and expiry and your organization name ..
