Q: Linux in China. Do you use it on your PC?
I use ubuntu and kubuntu on my computer here -- it's relatively virus-free, fast, really gorgeous interface, has about 80% of the programs that I need from Windows and with "wine" I can have built-in compatibility. How about you? Any Linux users out there in the expat China community?

I use Linuxmint. Havent used windows for maybe 5 years now besides at work. At the start I used Ubuntu but when they released unity moved away to mint. Also have Zorin on one of the other laptops.
Plus with this year only 40 linux viruses being found compared to the thousands of windows and mac os viruses and being in China thee home of hacking and viruses good to have linux which is almost virus and hacker free..

Thanks for the great tip re Linux Mint. I am downloading it now and will install it later. I have also found that Ubuntu has become really bloated and sometimes it uses more resources and is slower than my Windows 7.
I'll get back to you later and let you know what I think.

My answer would be almost the same. I teach in a university near Dalian. Earlier I taught in Jilin. And I am also just using Linuxmint, having been weaned away from both Mac and Windows. The hardest part to deal with for some users is their felt dependence on certain programs. But they forget that, in almost every case, there is a totally suitable Linux application - free.
This is not to say I have not had a few problems with Mint, but they were slight, easily solved by accessing their own forums.
I don't but maybe I should. I bought a netbook a few months ago but it's as useful as a brick to me because it has a fake Windows 8 that won't change the language from Chinese to anything.
Maybe I should wipe it out and use Linux.
Can I open and write in Word and Excel and make power points on Linux?

Linux has hundreds of different distros to choose from I suggest look through this site http://distrowatch.com/ to find out what is available. As for word most linux distros come with either Libre Office or Open Office which is 99% the same as microoft office and it is for FREE as with all of Linux.
I did. Every time a Chinese person saw my laptop, they would scold me for not being fashionable enough and it would really hurt my feelings.

You can use Zorin which has a Windows XP/7 interface or use Pear which has a mac os interface. They wouldnt know the difference.
