Q: Local taxi prices... and getting ripped off

In my neck of the woods, starting price is 11RMB, and I think it's 1RMB/2.75kms... and a wait-time kicks in after about 5 mins total waiting (not sure of the price). So my usual 14.5km journey  home costs me 45-50RMB.

In the last place I worked, starting fee was about 5RMB, and while I don't recall the mileage rate, from 'downtown' to home was about 25RMB (similar distance/travel time as current)

Shanghai taxis like to take longer routes (unless you argue and can back it up... I had a fapiao for the in-bound journey - 18RMMB, and out-bound this driver went so the wrong way... till I showed him the fapiao - then he turned off the meter!) Also, you almost need to demand you get your change!!! Starting rate of 14RMB

Xiamen - +3RMB per short trip for a 'fuel surcharge'... WTF??? Stsarting rate of...?? 8RMB?

What's it like where you are?

For me to get from downtown to my home by official taxi, about 50 mins, I get charged around 90 RMB.

I can get to downtown using the bus and metro for about 8 RMB. But because the good bars are downtown I normally taxi it home wink

For local trips I use black cars or the bus.  A 20 minute trip in a black cab, about 7 to 8 km, will cost me 35 RMB.  A 2 km trip will cost me 25 RMB.

And.... sorry to everyone.... I tend to tip.  But I have to do it furtively if the wife is in the car... she goes beserk if she catches me.

I only use a car maybe 3 times a week. For me it's good value. I can spend less on taxis here in a year than a car would depreciate in value by going from the forecourt to road at home.

Actually, the last bit was a lie. I never paid more than a couple of thousand for a car in my home country.  But I still pay less for taxis here than I did for insurance, tax and fuel there.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
