Q: Looking for a job on a Chinese-language website?
At some point I was trying to find a job using zhaopin.com (one of the biggest job websites in China). It only has a Chinese-language version, but I wanted to try my luck. I've applied for a bunch of non-teaching positions. The next day my phone went on a rampage as I received around 20 calls, all inviting me for an interview, but soon my Chinese dream ended. None of the recruiters expected to see a foreigner, even though I've only uploaded an English CV and my Chinese name doesn't sound Chinese at all. Out of the 3 interviews I attended all of the employers said that they can't employ foreigners and were extremely surprised to see me (not to mention other applicants). Can anyone explain me whether I did something wrong or should simply forget about using the Chinese language websites when trying to find a job?
I assume they thought you were Chinese and your English resume looked so professional that you must have studied overseas or something. They probably didn't even really read it much... just looked at it and thought... WOW now that's a resume.
Chinese are big on presentation and little on substance. But they probably weren't lying when they mentioned that they weren't legally allowed to hire foreigners. Takes special credentials... only apply to jobs that specify that foreigners are welcome to apply.
