it is a residence permit ....... what letter do you folks assign to that? if it's an L or an F or an XXX ..or whatever.... why isn't this designation on the document stamped in my passport.....

Where was it issued? If at an Embassy abroad, it is a visa. If at a local PSB inside China, it is a residence permit. But you were the one applying for a visa, for which you applied? If you asked for one, they will not issue another type instead, they just approve it or deny it.
And if it is a residence permit, they do not carry letters normally, even if they work as a visa once issued.
Yeah we need more details. Where, who and how did you get this residence permit?
Residence permits don't have letters, just the purpose in Chinese, you can check it with Google translation camera features, if you use an Android phone.
There are usually no letters on resident permits. It's when you apply for a visa that the letter is necessary, and depending to the length of your stay, they change it to a residence permit.
You only need to care about the expiration date, length of stay and number of entries.
