Exactly. Rich45 above has hit it on the mark. Why should cricket be popular in China? It's such a British sport at that and so, so boring and it is just not within the Chinese mindset of taking a bat and smacking a ball. China is an old, old country with a long history of martial arts, among other things, why should it even consider something as so totally irrelevant in the 21st century as cricket?
Shining_brow:
And what, pray tell, would be a 'relevant' sport??? Sport is sport - people like it and play it.. or they don't! Big sports are big because they are popular with a lot of people around the world. Cricket is EXTREMELY 'relevant' in England, Australia, India, Pakistan, South Africa, West Indies, and even in a lot of other countries that don't stand a chance at winning the Cricket World Cup.... As for 'relevance'... hmmm - there's a thread!!!
nevermind:
What a stupid answer. There's about a thousand things China didn't have until recently they are in love with now, like the internet. Of course I guess you somehow think a culture not evolving is a good thing, eh? Tht way you can keep your wu mao job and fool all the peasants.
I think cricket is not popular for the same reason hockey isn't popular.
(and as a Canadian, this pains me to even talk about)
1. China and team sports simply don't mix well
2. The equipment is costly and for the most part not readily available
Why play organized team sports when they can grab a basketball and play in their jeans, shoes, buttoned shirts at any of the many basketball courts available?
abrana:
I simply do not agree with you all!
Some has not just introduced cricket properly in China. The people working on the development of the sport in china are using the 18th century techniques. However, all the cricket playing nations have adopted the 21st century version of the cricket that is called "Cricketaiment".
You can look at Indian Premier League (IPL), its purely entertainment, something more than just old fashioned cricket. The introduction just cricketaiment leagues brings a lot of opportunities for all people.
In this regard, i have made an outstanding plan to introduce the concept of cricketaiment in China starting from Beijing. A prototype of this method is currently being tested in Harbin where university students use to play this game every Saturday night. In recent weeks the strength of players has been increased from 8 to 15. And by the grace of God, it will become at least 100 in each city of Peoples Republic.
Probably because sports like Basketball took over the popularity completely. You won't hear any chinese national talking about their favorite cricket players, but you will find many of them favoring basketball particularly the NBA.
Because it looks silly. But don't feel bad. Baseball isn't popular either.
Playing cricket is as easy as other sports.
The only thing that matters is just how you manage to have it. The university students in Harbin have just one Cricket bat and a Tennis ball and they enjoy the sport in a better way than the Chinese National team, who was struck out for 37 runs only.
Selecting 30 players and train them at national level will do nothing in the development of the sport in China. I guarantee that if i teach cricket according to my theory of Cricketaiment, People can learn it easily and each match will be finished in 60 minutes less a Soccer/Hockey match.
Believe me, Chinese government is not going to repeat the same mistake that the US did. China will one day become a country with highest number of cricketers playing the sport at all levels.
crimochina:
cricket is as easy as other sports huh, so explain please. without copying and pasting .
Cos its only played in certain countries colonised by the Brits. Why dont they play it in the US, in France, anywhere. If you knew anything about cricket you would know theres only a handful of countries that play it.
That being said, there are some cricket clubs around China, started by Indians or Pakistanis I believe.
abrana:
For your kind information now a days USA, Germany, Belgium, Norway, Italy, Greece, Afghanistan, Nepal, Malaysia, Japan, Netherlands, Denmark, Canada, Singapore and Hong Kong; all these states are playing cricket at international level.
The national teams of all these countries play international cricket leagues and participate in all regional tournaments.
If you personally do not like cricket, them i am really sorry that no one on this planet can force you to play it.
xunliang:
go check my questions before you make random assumptions. Im from England, I don't like cricket...o no.........I love it!!! The usa might play cricket but they sure as hell aren't playing test cricket. And when was the last time you saw a usa cricket match? or german? haha
If states like Netherlands, USA, Namibia, Hong Kong, Germany, Belgium and Italy can play the sport than i believe Chinese can also do it.
The only thing that how you play it. Since China has plan to host T20 World Cricket event in 2020, so we all should play our part in attaining a full member status for China to host such a mega event. If Indian/Australian/US Businessmen can earn a lot after organizing such event, then why chinese can not do this.
The reality is dear that "nothing is impossible". As far as Chinese traditions are concerned. we have observed that things are changing with the passage of time. China & USA just can not sit outside the Cricket World as US has also lost a big business which US Cricket Association admits that they should have not missed the opportunity.
So Cricket is a big market. In order to beat Indians at all levels, Chinese have to do it. As there is no other choice left. And u plz do not worry, I am coming to China very soon.
i always thought cricket was an animal that kept me up at night
Because the lunch break in cricket is only 40 minutes and you can only sleep in the afternoon if you are way down the batting order and not expecting a collapse!
How did the term "chinaman" enter into cricket when the sport is not even played to a great extent here?
SOmebody once referred that sport to me as the rich man's sport. So I'm guessing the poor don't play it and the rich don't care about it!
At least it is getting popular among expats in Guangzhou, Shaghai or Yiwu..
Now we play cricket every Sunday from 10.30 AM to about 3 PM at Guangzhou Jinan University Soccer (Football) Ground. For more details; you can see blog about this cricket gzcricket.blog.com or shivis.blog.com
Actually the home of Chinese cricket is in Xian I believe.
Deep fried cricket is popular at night street barbecue spots in China. I haven't tried it, but heard It's high in protein.
Because it requires patience.
China actually invented cricket, but it was stolen by the British.
The Chinese would never be able to agree where the boundary was. They would also want areas outside the boundary.
because it's the absolutely most boring sport in the world. At least for me
They'll get there. Where there is money to got most countries will have a go in the end.
And by the time that 20/20 hits the Olympics- China will have it's own league
Check this out from last year
