I remember when I was at a well to do school in Beijing doing part time teaching, the School received a call to confirm about a past teacher.. But I think it was inquiring about some character of the teacher, not confirming whether the reference was legit. or maybe indirectly it was confirming that as well

You can use an official company email like for example: @Wallstreet.com... not an email thats from yahoo or gmail, if its a professional email address then the American company can send them a request to learn more about you. It worked perfectly for our former Wallstreet teachers.

It really depends on the job that you do in America, most legitimate institutions will require some references. You should maybe get letters of reference from your employers as well as making sure that they know they will be called. You might want to get a criminal background check done here as well if you are going to work in a school. You can get them for about 700 RMB.

Good call on the Criminal Check in China....I came unstuck over this.

Zero record in the UK and good boy in China, but because the Chinese Police couldn't be bothered giving me a letter to cover the period I was out of the UK it makes things difficult to get a new check done....
