Can anyone tell me how much time does it take to renew residence permit in Beijing?
and if i want it urgent, is there something I can do about it??
sorry to post as anon.. I am a shy user

it takes 3 weeks almost...
but if its done by your institute/company.. it can take 3 months unless you keep watch
Why 'urgent'?
Your employer should be on it for timely renewal. I'm thinking, few days (a week) before expiration is sufficient by Chinese law. PSB won't do it a month before expiration.
If you finished your Contract, your new employer should behave the same, however 'Release letter' from old RP sponsor is needed.
I believe, all RP extension process starts with application for new Foreign Expert Certificate. You need Cancellation cert. of old FEC' for that and 1 photo. I believe your diploma, and employment history is needed for new FEC. It can be applied online by your new RP sponsor.
Next step is 'extension of RP'! Your old employer must get you 30-days L visa, after your old RP expire, so your new employer has sufficient time for new FEC application.
Few months ago, I got 30 days RP extension on ending of my RP, not 30-days L at Xinjiang PSB, what is the same.
All posters at eChina are shy! You can register with any handle you desire. Purpose of registration is, as anon. you can keep repeating the same Q already asked and answered. As registered user, you'll get reply: 'Why did you ask again?'
If you do it yourself it can be very fast, but if you let your employer or visa agent take care of it then it can take for ever.
As with everything in China, for that matter.
You just need your application to be submitted before the end date of your current RP.
Yeah, in shenzhen they have it posted that you need to submit 30 days before but i sure didnt. I submitted just a couple days before and everything was all good.
If your employer does not so this in a timely manner, it is your responsibility to remind them.
ignorance is not a excuse when it comes to keeping your visa in order and an up-to-date RP..
Also, make sure to get a receipt when your passport is getting a new RP, and a return date.
With some employers, you have to keep on their case to make sure it is done.
ok now that you don't understand the reason of my question and the fact that icnif and sorrel have gone way too far... I have to be un-anon and explain myself again...
there is no problem that my RP is going to expire soon and I would be living illegally... the real case scenario is that my RP will expire on 15th Sept.. I have to go to Xian on 17th Sept.. I want my passport back before 17th..I have given it to my institute on 1st sept.. I couldn't give it to them earlier coz all of them were on vacations....so the real thing I wanted to know was if i could do something to get my PP back by 15th Sept...

Maybe not doable!
Maybe PSB will listen to your request. Made up some urgent thingy, and tell School's rep. about it. Ask her to check at cops, if you can get passport with extended RP back before 17th. I usually talk at cops only if asked. So, tell rep. about passport return, because…….
Good luck! Most posters advice out of their own experience, so you can't really judge if 'sorrel went too far', because it probably happened to her! Me? I never go too far!
Disclaimer: 'I didn't receive payment from eChina for increasing number of registered members! Yet!'
so i went too far? my feelings are hurt
@mani786 - it would help if you had asked a question with all the information, and not left people guessing:
Questions have been asked previously by posters who then went on to reveal that they 'forgot' about their visa expiration date and were looking for some sort of sympathy when caught and fined, so my answer was based on the original question.
Depending on how you are traveling, a photo-copy of your passport picture page could be sufficient for identification purposes, as you should have a document from the PSB stating that they have your passport.
Talk to your employer about the method of transport you will be taking and see how you can work around that.
@ icniff77 - no, it didn't happen to me that i was unprepared
icnif77:
Not 'you were unprepared'....but 'happening with (timely) extension'!
How's my 'sprache'? English 'sprache'?
I'll do Hebrew, if you say 'bad!'

What happened here? Did you down-vote yourself?
It looks 'Prots' get upset. I spent my 'up', and we're still closed.

I'm a shy guy too...what can I do?
FEC or work permit 1 working days
when u submit passport in PSB, you have to wait 15 working days to get it back. previously it took 5 working days.
hopefully can give you some headsup

It took me a week, to get mine back from PSB a month ago in Fujian.
