Q: Spring Festival - point of contention between Chinese families?

How do couples generally decide which family to go see for Spring Festival? Especially if they come from different provinces... is it just once every two years? Do families often get into fights over this?

Both families can meet in one place so than they don't have to decide. Instead of one family going one place and the other family staying in another. It's like a reunion so everybody in both families meet in one location and celebrate.

I do not believe so.  It is customary in China for the woman to leave her family and join her husband's family at marriage.  Also, most marriages do happen between couples from same village, town,  city or whatever.  If not, then is when complications may arise.  But Chinese customs and traditions also indicate that on the second day after New Year, husband and wife will visit wife's family.  So, no complications foreseen if tradition observed.

But again, keep in mind that here, the Lady is part of her husband's family, so I would say the husband's family will get all of the New Year visits.

A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
