Not visited here for a while, I just get bored with talking about China and the Chinese. And for anyone here who holds any recollection of my saying i'd packed in drinking, i'd like to say that that was actually something of a typo;
WHAT I THINK I SAID WAS, "Alcohol is a marvelous way to relax, if you don't have anything better to do. I have a fridge-full of booze and I plan to empty it all tonight. I'm going to get messed up if I don't stop drinking. My wife will be beside herself. With sorrow, heartache and pain each day gets slowly easier and easier. In that knowledge my resolve strengthens because she is the only thing in life that really blows my mind, seeks new treasures, takes me to heavenly places and booze can do that for me no more. The drunkard's tale shall not be heard. 'Tis mine alone now to tell."
BUT WHAT I REALLY MEANT TO SAY WAS, "Alcohol is a marvelous way to relax. If you don't have anything better to do, I have a fridge-full of booze and I plan to empty it. Tonight i'm going to get messed up. If I don't stop drinking, my wife will be beside herself with sorrow, heartache and pain. Each day gets slowly easier and easier in that knowledge. My resolve strengthens because she is the only thing in life that really blows. My mind seeks new treasures, takes me to heavenly places, and booze can do that for me. No more the drunkard's tale shall not be heard. 'Tis mine alone now to tell."
Ahh, but such is the curse of punctuation. Simple mistake I guess.
But to get to the point, i've just heard from the missus that 99% of western brand alcohol, such as whiskey, vodka, gin, rum and such, is made from dodgy chemicals for about a dollar a bottle. Sounds far-fetched, but she works in international trade and says she knows a great deal about the subject, and I believe her.
So to get to the point; where the hell can a man get a decent drink in this town?
I am not sure 99% is the correct number, I've heard numbers from 98.7% to 99.57% is fake.
If you just want beer, then there are a lot of importers of beer from proper manufacturers. We have a Belgium bar in town and it was originally run by a proper Belgian man, with proper Belgium beer. The beer came from a Shenzhen based importer/distributor.
So it is out there. Also, beer, a Tsingtao seems like a decent product, and sold at prices hardly worth faking (famous last words) the problem is bigger with the more expensive liquids such as wine and spirits.
Oh. Don't empty your fridge completely in one go. You'll need something to numb yourself to withstand the following days nagging.
Jenny Lous - 5 locations in Beijing but they are pricey.
Hmm, that number does sound high to me too. So far, I never had a bottle of booze I bought that tasted particularly off (aside from a cheap brand which would could have been just bottom shelf quality). I've had Jameson, Jim Beam (Rye, White Label, and Black Label), Jack Daniel's, Sobieski, Agavales, Glenfiddich, Glenmorangie, and several other brands/bottlings, with none of them tasted fake.
Though, I couldn't prove they were legit. It's possible they were still fake, just close enough to the real thing that I couldn't tell the difference.
I might have to bring a bottle from home next time I travel, and compare to what I buy off of Taobao (I get most of my alcohol off of Taobao, since it's cheaper than the shops for the most part).
I am curious if some places are more likely to have fakes than others. I would imagine a KTV or nightclub (especially one that relies not on repeat drinkers, but tourists they'll never see again) would be more likely to get away with stocking fakes. Taobao usually has certificates of authenticity, though, if you can fake a bottle, you can fake a piece of paper. Imported food stores (and the international aisles of stores) don't include proof of authenticity beyond the word of the seller, it's hard to prove it anyhow.
I tried jd dot com to get authentic rum and scotch twice.. i got original one..you can also try..
Whiskey being very popular... sorry, cross that... Whiskey BOTTLES being very popular (for facevalue), it's simply out of the question for me. Realistically, if it's popular, it means the processes of making fake products are probably quite mature.
I usually drink rum, because even cheap rums have a distinct smell that adjunction of water/fake components ruins, and also because it's not popular in China, so less interesting for the faking industry.
For finding a supplier, I'd say trial and error if you are knowledgable, or simple going to bigger suppliers.
I never drink anything in bars, even expat bars, in mainland. Until authorities will start giving a damn.
it wouldnt be a problem if u go to downtown and shopping in War-mart,i've saw many different kinds .
Scandinavian:
War-mart is also where I get all my Molotov cocktails :)
icnif77:
I'm contemplating to open small bar in the future. What's 'molotov cocktail'? Can you choose between shaken or stirred?
susan3332:
molotov? shaken stirred? i know nothing about alcohol : / but the color of cocktail is amazing :)
Which town are you in?
You should scroll to HK for shopping. I came back off EU duty free shops with TWO (me smuggling) bottles of Auchentoshan, best tasting ('No surrender') single malt, IMO. I also fancy Caol Ila.
I'm after the taste, not the 'spirit analysis' that much. I also drink alcohol rarely, but when I do, I want the best!
Maybe, you should try 'homemade' booze: 'dried figs and some water' in half open jar on the warm spot (<20*C) for a week or two. You can exchange figs with any high sugar fruit (depend on your taste). That recipe somebody gave me, after he came out of jail. I've never tried myself.
However, I cut dried figs and walnuts and add HK VSOP Hennessy. I drink it occasionally in the evenings, with Castro's cigar. It's got higher alcohol % and bit sweeter taste than original brandy.
'No surrender' = 'Good morning' in Irish!

Damn, I used to have a colleague who was a member of the Scottish Whiskey Society, now there is a fine club to join.
icnif77:
I can't drink that mucho to 'qualify' as member of any Scotts society, butT I lived with brothers from Glasgow in Ft. Lauderdale years ago, what means I passed initial training. We split when I demanded to 'meet Nessie in person, or I consider it as not true'!
icnif77:
meiyou Nessie! Nesquick is coco powder! I want real animal(s).
