You can check this: http://aqicn.org/?map
Or http://aqicn.org/?city=Mudanjiang
Sometimes this isn't all that accurate. For example, many smaller cities have no measuring stations, or are provided incorrect information by the gubb'mint. I think. I've been to some really clean cities (according to this site) which were super filthy.
air pollution is just one thing, and probably a thing you cannot get away from easily.
another thing to consider is all the crop in the ground and in the water. your food is growing in the soil and the plants are watered with the polluted water.
There was an article on echinacities.com recently about cancer villages, those would be places to steer clear of
An article in today's NYT. China had 1.2 million deaths from air pollution in 2010, 40% of the world's total.
