Q: Unlikely popular western songs and artists in China

What's up with LENKA being a huge hit in China ? The "Trouble is a friend" and "I'm caught in the middle" song is played in every single store and like 10% of the people's ringtones here.

Here's another one that gets substantial playtime here in China: Fool's garden - Lemon Tree

WHY IS THIS SONG POPULAR IN CHINA ?

Most of the bars I go into have a steady stream of Karen Carpenter & John Denver playing.  I use to semi-like both of them before I came to China.  Now I cringe whenever I hear their songs.

Lots of them are popular because English teaching programs seem to use a select few. I figured this out when my wife new the words to country roads by John Denver. She then showed me a file on her computer full of English songs from her English text..... all of them were the songs you so often hear in bars and such here and never knew why...so there you go!

Oh my Lady Ga Ga....the young people here listenen to the craziest mixture of music from the 50's to the 80's....with a few modern bands thrown in.
My friend here (a girl) is totally into Karen Carpenter, Elvis Presley, Beyonce, and Lady Ga Ga?
What the hell?  I think (and have no clue...just guessing), that the government approves certain artists and kiboshes others.
Like why does no one here even know who Nirvana, AC/DC, Johnny Cash, Led Zeppelin or Kings of Leon are (to name but a few)?

Judged a speech competition yesterday. After the first 5 students finished it was time for an intermission, a vocal performance by one of the students, featuring that 80's 2-hit wonder, Richard Marx. The song was "Right Here Waiting". I have heard it a thousand times at the KTV's but now I endured a live performance while the other students went nuts for it!!

A:No, it's not allowed to work under RP at 2nd job! I'd say, Z visa/RP sponsor can have an objections to your part-time job. I did the same at my English teaching in China and elsewhere, butT ... I casually mentioned at my prime job, some kindergarten or another school asked me to work with them part-time. Then, my Q: "Is that permitted?" ...  Answer from RP sponsor was always "Yes, but you can't be late or miss the classes at our school ..." with my reply: "No, our work schedule has a priority, and I'll arrange classes at kindergarten only in my free time." When I cleared that, I was undertaking any extra teaching hours at other schools and private students in my free time.Sometimes, teachers at my prime job asked me if I'm willing to have some extra classes elsewhere.I accepted after the talk with School's principal. I suggest, you test the felling at your Z/RP sponsor and once you see they don't object, you can work at 2nd job. Keeping your 2nd job as a secret from your employer won't work, 'cause you're laowai and Chinese know exactly what you do in your free time. However, despite your employer's agreement for extra work, you are still in violation of Chinese Labour law, and even if your sponsor agrees to your extra work, you can still get in trouble, because it's clearly written (somewhere ... ) that under Z/WP, one can work only at the Z-sponsor and nowhere else. Penalties ... I'd say, there won't be any warnings and you'll be required to exit China in short Exit time.It never happened to me, so I can't really advice how is when manure hits the fan ...  -- icnif77
