I know that for statistical purposes, and even just so the embassy can issue warnings should it be necessary, it's recommended to report if you're victim to a crime. But is it only in case you're personally victim of a very violent crime? What if a friend of yours gets beaten up and ends up in hospital? Or how about less severe crimes?

If someone were to spit and landed on my shoe, I will not report it to the Embassy. But if I am walking down the street minding my own business and a crowd jumps on me and bits me up requiring a few weeks stay in the hospital, I sure will contact the Embassy as soon as I am able to do so. They will probably do nothing claiming budget limitations, but as reports do come in indicating incidents, problem areas can be identified properly and warnings issued to others. Only for that reason it is worth to make a detailed report with cause.
