Q: Visas for Chinese people: Do some have multi-uses for other countries?

A Chinese friend of mine is heading to the US in the summer to visit a friend and is getting all the necessary documents ready. He wants to travel around a bit though and maybe head up to Canada, which I guess he'll have to get another visa for. Regardless however, my question is do some visit visas (Schengen aside) allow people to visit neighboring countries that are on good terms with each other? I heard somewhere that UK visit visas also allow access to Ireland.

I know that you can get a special visa to visit both Thailand and Cambodia.

The UK visa didn't allow access to Ireland a few years ago, I'm glad that they have finally changed the regulation.
